A leather atelier in Luoyang
Zhosie is a leather atelier in Luoyang, China, making belts and handbags entirely by hand. Every piece is cut and finished by one artisan rather than passed along a line, from the first cut to the final burnishing of the edges.
At Zhosie, we believe in the quiet power of exceptional leather. Each piece is born from a dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design sensibility — resulting in accessories that transcend seasons and trends.

What we make, and why the material differs
We do not use one leather for everything, because the same material is rarely right for two different jobs.
Belts are cut from full-grain, vegetable-tanned hides at 4 mm and thicker. A belt is a tension product — it is pulled tight every day and the load concentrates at the hole the buckle pin sits in — so it needs dense fibre, or the holes elongate within a season.
Handbags use top-grain and full-grain chrome-tanned leather, chosen for drape and for low empty weight. In something you carry all day, the extra weight of a heavier leather costs more than its extra durability returns. Every piece is specified by strap drop and empty weight, not just by colour.
Footwear is where the workshop began, and a small line is in development.
How a piece is made
Each piece passes through 47 individual steps, most of them by hand, and most of them checked by the same person who began them. The stages that matter most to how a piece ages:
- Selecting. Hides are inspected and folded by hand before anything is cut, reading for grain tightness and for how the leather creases and recovers.
- Cutting. Panel placement on the hide is chosen for the job the part has to do — a load-bearing strap gets the densest area.
- Skiving and edge work. Edges are thinned, burnished and sealed by hand. This is slow, and it is what separates a piece that frays in a year from one that does not.
- Assembly and finishing. One person, start to finish, with tolerances measured in millimetres — the standard the workshop inherited from shoemaking.
Why we are in Luoyang
Luoyang sits on the middle reaches of the Yellow River in western Henan, a city better known for its ancient grottoes than for leather. The workshop is here because the craft was already here: before there were bags and belts, there were shoes, made by hand in a family trade three generations deep.
